Kitchen Reveal

Alright.  Let's talk about my kitchen.

Like I mentioned a few days ago, my kitchen is finally finally done!  And it only took a year and a half.  But the end result is totally worth it, right??

Just to remind you of what it looked like before-- here's what my kitchen looked like when we first moved into this house.  It had a lot of bright colours going on, but was still dark and dreary.  It felt cramped, small, a tad depressing, and really didn't work for me :)

Fast forward 4 years, and here's what it looks like today.  When I walk into my kitchen I can hardly believe it's the same room.  Here's what it looks like now (when it's clean).

Now let's get into some of the details.

This was NOT a "go big or go home" kind of kitchen... but it also wasn't an extreme budget kitchen.  We had one major, MAJOR factor working in our favour-- my husband builds and designs custom kitchens for a living.  So... when it comes to the cabinetry, we got the best cabinetry possible and only paid for the materials since Doug was able to build it all with his own two hands.  But even though we were able to get the cabinetry we wanted for a great deal, we still were very conscious of our budget.  Here's a quick break down of the saves vs. the splurges in this kitchen:

SAVE:

kept existing appliances
kept existing layout-- for the most part
ikea faucet
inexpensive backsplash tile choice
used reclaimed wood for shelves
bought inexpensive knobs for cabinet doors
did ALL the work ourselves.  ALL.

SPLURGE:

quartz countertops (BUT, were still a bit of a save... as you'll soon find out!!)
expensive (and beautiful) bin pulls on all drawers
Closed up an existing window and made another one taller
Removed bulkhead

Okay.  So that was the summary.  Here are the details.

To save money, we didn't remove the wall that separates the kitchen from the living room.  People renovating with a similar floor plan typically do this, but it would have required considerably more time and cash-- two things we sure don't have a lot of these days!!  I still wanted that space to feel unique, so we added some open shelves between the upper cabinets to display some pretty stuff and tiled all the way up to the ceiling.  The lower cabinets are the same depth as the upper cabinets which keeps the room feeling spacious but still gives us added storage and counter space.

This next area of the kitchen required the most amount of work.  When we moved in there used to be a floor to ceiling window right where those open shelves are located.  While I loved all the natural light the window gave, the kitchen really really needed more counter space and more room for drawers!  Previously I had 3 really teeny tiny drawers-- now I have these 6 big ones plus three more on the other side of the sink.  And I can't tell you how much of a difference the extra three feet of counter space makes when I'm working in the kitchen with all my little "helpers".  It really makes this room so much more functional.

While this spot of the kitchen is definitely more functional, I also wanted it to be pretty.  Isn't that what we all want?  A kitchen that's both functional and pretty??  So... bring on more open shelves!  My kitchen is a very white-- and I love it-- but to keep it from feeling too cold and clinical I added some natural wood.  These natural wood shelves turned out to be my absolute most favourite part of the kitchen.  They turned out way better than I ever thought they would.  They were also a money saving solution-- the wood was free as it was just sitting around the shop taking up space and we didn't have to pay to have them sprayed like other finished parts.

These shelves hold all of my everyday dishes and glassware.  It's the perfect spot-- I unload my dishwasher right up onto those shelves-- no opening cabinet doors and moving things around-- everything gets stacked right up on these shelves and is used every, every day.

I've had a lot of people email asking about our countertops.  Even though I love marble, I knew that it could be a risky choice for my kitchen since we cook and live in this room all day long.  So, I decided to go for quartz since it's a much more durable option.  I was going to go with Misty Carrera by Caesarstone, but in the 11th hour I discovered that the countertop company we were going to work with sold a generic brand of quartz that had a colour that I liked even better than Caesarstone's Misty Carrera.  The spots and colour variation is more subtle than the Misty Carrera and is a tad less "grey".  And the best part was it was 40% cheaper than the Caesarstone option.  Pretty much a no brainer if you as me!

Others have asked about our cabinetry hardware.  The bin pulls on all of the drawers are from Restoration Hardware and were a splurge.  To save a bit of money I ordered knobs in the same finish (polished nickel) from an online supplier that were considerably cheaper than the matching ones from RH.  And, I really really love them.

Our faucet was a major save-- Ikea.  $79.  And I was like... WHAT!!?  Seriously.  It has the look I wanted and for $79??  Again, a total no brainer if you ask me!  I love the handles-- they have a vintage vibe that I totally love.

And the backsplash.  We saved money using a standard 3x6 white subway tile from Home Depot.  Even though our backsplash tile choice was cheap, it's still a classic look and I really love the way it looks all the way up to to the ceiling behind the open shelves, and around the kitchen window.  I also really love the light grey grout we selected.  It is subtle, but really makes the tile a feature in the kitchen.

Next week I'll do a special post listing the sources.   I bet you can't wait!!  If anyone has a specific question they want answered leave one in the comments or feel free to email me directly.

To conclude, I'm just going to brag about my hubby for a minute.  Doug designed/built/installed this kitchen with his own two hands.  ALL OF IT.  I knew he was good at what he does-- but even I was amazed at how GOOD he is at building kitchens... and how GOOD he is at all the little details that most people miss and don't notice.  I could explain my vision to him knowing that he would and could create exactly what I dreamed up.  Every little detail is perfect.  Exceptional.  Every day I walk into my kitchen and I can't believe Doug made it.  What would I do without him!!

So, if you live in the lower mainland and are looking for a cabinetry guy-- I know a really really good one!!  Shoot me an email if you want some info.

And, that concludes the long awaited (almost thought it was never going to end) kitchen renovation.  I love it.  Hope you do too :)

ps:  sorry 'bout the amateur photos-- still learning!
pps:  don't you just love how those pink peonies made it into almost every shot??
ppps:  pink peonies are my absolute favourite flower.  And a bundle for $5?  Score.
pppps:  wish I could have each and every one of you over for an awesome party so we could enjoy this kitchen for reals!!

It's really really done

Today is an exciting day because I'm telling you now-- MY KITCHEN IS DONE!!!!

All the little electrical details, the touch up painting, the little tweaking... done.

I snapped this picture a few days ago to commemorate the occasion.  This is really my absolute favourite spot of the kitchen.  Fav.  Makes me smile and grin like a fool every time I walk into the room.

One of these days I'll take a few more pics to show you the kitchen in all it's fully finished glory.

But for now, I'm going to enjoy it.  And try to keep it clean...

Stay tuned for more!!

projects are my love language

The other day Doug made my top secret hidden spice drawers look pretty.  Instead of looking at the melamine boxes when I open the cupboard beside the stove I see these pretty drawer fronts decked out with the left over drawer pulls from the rest of the kitchen.

They match the rustic wood open shelves Doug put up in the kitchen.
They make me happy when I cook dinner.

Little details like this make me happy.

Rustic Wood Shelves in the Kitchen

We made some major progress in the kitchen over the past couple of weeks.

First of all, the open shelves Doug build for the space beside the window were installed.  Originally I had planned to do white painted shelves to match the ones on the opposite side of the kitchen, but I kept seeing pictures of  rustic looking natural wood ones and just had to give it a try!  Turns out it was a pretty good option for the budget too since they were free-- instead of buying more materials to construct paintable shelves and then pay to have them sprayed Doug was able to use wood already sitting in the shop to build these two shelves.  I wanted a wood tone that contrasted with the dark floors so I opted to seal them with a clear coat and skipped the stain.  I love the tone of this wood-- they're maple-- in case you're a wood nerd-- like my hubby.  Bet you wouldn't be surprised to find out that Doug in a huge fan of the natural wood shelves...

Once the shelves were installed the tiling could continue.  Like the open shelves on the other side of the room, Doug took the subway tile right up to the ceiling.  It looks so great.

The shelves are so awesome for our everyday dishes and cups... I unload the contents of the dishwasher  below and put it all up on the shelves... so quick and easy to put everything away :)

After getting those shelves in and the tile work done I figured we'd be waiting a while before the grouting could happen, but Doug randomly had some time off during one afternoon this week and he was able to get it all grouted in a few hours with the help of his brother.  I mentioned in an earlier post that I'd decided to go for a light grey grout-- and the colour/brand we ended up selecting looks exactly like I wanted.  It's not too light, not too dark, not too beige-y, defines the tiles without drawing too much attention-- pretty much perfect.

I love my tile backsplash.

Got a few more things to finished up and then this kitchen will finally, be completely and totally done.  The end is near.  I can't wait.

And on rare days when I have a little bit of sunlight streaming through my kitchen window, I get pretty excited to enjoy this beautiful (and finished!!) kitchen this summer!!  A sunny and warm kitchen is one of my favourite things...

Going Grey

Selecting a grout color for the backsplash feels like a bit of a big deal... cause once the grout is mixed and it's being troweled onto the wall there is no turning back... you better like what you chose!  Over time I've come to realize that when choosing grout, not every white is created equal, and the perfect shade of grey can be a lot more difficult to find than you think.  I've outright avoided using the grout sold at at Home Depot because their grey options are either really dark or very beige-y brown, and it seems like people feel like the color samples they provide are not a true representation of what the final color will really be.  For the bathroom/kitchen tile in this project we ended up purchasing several shades of Flextile grout and were really happy with the colors and the way they ended up looking.  So today I popped into a local tile shop that sells Flextile grout (Tiles for Less here in town) and picked up some samples of their different grout color choices.

So far I think I'm leaning towards the "Bone" color... it's a nice light shade of grey that contrasts the tile nicely and works well with the countertops.  (the sample is perched on one of the top tiles in this picture!)

I'll probably stare at it for several days in varying shades of lighting (because that's just the way I am) before deciding... and may see if there are any other brands out there that have a grey that could work...

Anyone out there have the perfect shade/brand of grey grout they'd like to share?

In other "grey" news, the kids have their new headboards up in their room... and they're grey!

Originally we were planning to build the kids beds with drawers for clothes storage but as time went on we realized that we would never have time to get that project started.  So... time for plan B!  I scoured craigslist for some cheap wood headboards and found two that were pretty similar.  I opted to paint them grey... and am really happy with the way they turned out!  I used Rustoleum's Slate Grey in a gloss finish in case you're wondering-- they look pretty dark in this picture but it's actually a nice medium grey.

The next part of the plan is to instead outfit the closet with custom shelving/drawers for all the kids stuff-- which will be quicker to build and way cheaper to accomplished than building beds.  In the meantime we've got dressers in the closet!  I've got some more details to finish up in this room... then I'll have to share more pictures!

Backsplash

Who's tired of hearing about us working on the kitchen?  Not me!!  Any time there's a bit of progress I'm a happy lady.  This weekend Doug started doing the tiling... he got about half of it done, and let me tell you, I am loving it.  We went with 3x6 basic white subway tiles from Home Depot and they look awesome.  They are a warmer white that works well with the cabinetry color-- Cloud White.

We debated the grout line width for a while and decided to go with 1/16" spacers.  Since the tiles are a bit rounded at the edges the grout lines will be a bit wider than 1/16" but still nice and tight... which I like.  Doug totally blew me away with his tile expertise... the rows are nice and neat and spaced perfectly... which means I can go with a light grey grout-- just what I wanted.

And that was the weekend!  Doug worked on the kitchen while I attempted to keep the kids out of trouble.  Easier said than done :)

In other news, I've been eating/cooking sugar free this week ever since I found out that I've got gestational diabetes this time around.  It's really not all that bad-- a lot of veggies, meat, eggs, cheese, and whole grains.  With the arrival of each child I've had to adopt some interesting diets-- in the weeks after Caleb was born I had a pureed diet as my jaw was wired shut, with Emerson I ate dairy free for 6 months due to her allergies, and now-- a diabetic diet.  Out of all three diets, eating sugar free is by far the easiest.  I'll let you know how it goes...

After this I should really write a cookbook-- the dairy free, sugar free, pureed diet.  Definitely a best seller :)

Today

We're gearing up for the beginning of the third trimester... to celebrate, I purchased the one thing at American Eagle that actually fit me.  It's warm, cozy, kinda like wearing a blanket instead of a sweater, kinda awesome.  And it was also in the clearance section AND an additional 40% off today.

And another super exciting thing about today... more of my kitchen is ready to be installed!!

The excitement is starting to get to me... nerdy things like "booyah!"  and "woot woot!"  keep coming out of my mouth :)  Can ya blame me?

Happy Weekend everyone!!

Kindergarten and such...

I remember when I bought my first car, got my first apartment in the city, and started going to university.  I felt old.  Real old.

Today I took my child for his first day of kindergarten.  I'm ancient!  How am I old enough to have a child attending school??  They really do grow up so fast-- Caleb AND I :)

Thank goodness Caleb was ready-- he's been counting down the days and was excited to get there this morning.  As we marched down the street hand in hand towards the school's front door his steps did start to slow as we got closer... he whispered that he was a little nervous.  I told him that I understood and that it was totally fine to be nervous!  And, he did great-- looked a little shell shocked at times... but was excited to be there.  We'll see what happens when next week hits-- full day every day kindergarten... yikes!  It could take him time to get used to it, but I know that he'll love it.  He's ready.

In other news, I ordered some knob options for my kitchen from Hardware Hut and they arrived today.  Good prices, fast shipping.  I would have loved to get the knobs from Restoration Hardware to match the bin pulls we already installed, but at $11 a knob?  That was NOT going to happen.  I need 23 knobs!  You do the math.

I could not find a local place that sold knobs in a polished nickel finish-- not nice ones.  So I decided to order online.  I'm actually liking both options that I got so far...

They both look great alongside the RH bin pulls and work with our appliances.
The one on the left is half the price of Restoration Hardware knobs, and the one on the right is a tenth the price.  Now I've just gotta decide!  Do I want the really cheap option that looks and feels okay, or go for the reasonably priced option that looks and feels like a real winner... tough call.
I'll let you know what we decide!

Making Progress

After 3 days of washing dishes in my bathroom sink... I've got quartz countertops, a sink, and a functional faucet!  Now we've just gotta get that dishwasher up and running...

The cabinet doors have all been made-- Doug has to get all the finished parts ready to go and it can all be sent out for spraying... slow and steady wins the race, right?

Today

I may not have a sink or countertops in the kitchen today...

But I do have tons of fresh strawberries and raspberries-- picked (not by me) from the fields near my house this morning!
Yum-- they are AMAZING.  Berry season has started around here and I, for one, am a huge fan.

Now I've just gotta find a way to wash and freeze some of these berries...

Oh, and the kitchen was measured for countertops today-- hence the fact that my sink and makeshift counters disappeared. :)

Open Shelves Thursday

Lack of blogging... means that life's been busy.
Feel's like we've been running around all over town the past few days... and really, we have.

Over the past few days we've been going to BBQ's, having wiener roasts, taking the kids fishing (in the rain) at the trout hatchery, shopping at Metrotown way past the kids bedtime with NO stroller (so not a good idea) going to White Rock for a preschool field trip, T ball... the list goes on and on.

Those are my excuses and I'm sticking to them.

Anyways.  After all the work Doug did in the kitchen while I was out of town with the kids we've taken a bit of a break from working in the kitchen.  I have the faucet ordered now and need to order the rest of my hardware today and then everything will start arriving.  On Doug's to do list is to build all the drawer boxes, have the kitchen measured for countertops (he's handling that since he gets a good deal), build all the doors and finished parts, have it all sprayed, and then install everything :)  I'm thinking this kitchen is going to be "in progress" for quite a while!  But, if you can find the time to do it yourself, you can save a lot of $$.  So worth it.

In the meantime, I've been living with open shelves in the kitchen.  And really, I mean EVERY shelf is open.  As you can imagine... this little lady is loving it.

But as frustrating as it is to have the contents of my kitchen scattered all over the house (and in the backyard-- I recently discovered that Caleb had been commandeering my kitchen stuff for the sandbox-- nice) I really really have been loving having upper open shelves.  So, Doug and I decided to add a few more into the design!  Instead of having closed upper cabinetry where the big window used to be, we're going to have three rows of open shelves.  This is the perfect spot for all my white dishes and glassware.  Can you see it?

So, to honor the current state of my kitchen and the new plan to add more open shelves into the design, I've decided to declare today "Open Shelves Thursday".  Since my open shelves are currently not so attractive, how about we look at a few kitchens that have beautiful open storage?

This kitchen has ikea cabinetry-- amazing, right?

And that concludes Open Shelves Thursday.
