I most definitely cannot take credit for the tissue paper pom decor used at Rosanna's wedding. I got the basic instructions on how to make the poms on Martha Stewart's website.. Leave it to Martha to come up with another genius idea!! But... since I do feel experienced in the art of making poms... let me give you a few additional pointers...
- Get decent quality tissue paper. We used hallmark tissue paper (9 sheets for $1.00 at Walmart) and dollar store tissue paper (20 sheets for $1.00). Saving the extra $0.50 cents is NOT WORTH IT! You may lose your mind trying to fluff the pom by separating each layer... because no matter how gentle you are it WILL rip.
- Don't worry about finding cloth covered floral wire. Instead of getting all bent out of shape about the right wire I picked up your basic 26 gauge floral wire from Walmart for about $2.00 and only used the wire to HANG the pom... to secure the tissue paper layers together I stapled them together in the middle instead of using the wire to hold everything together. That way I didn't have to be as concerned about the wire tearing through the tissue paper.
- As you fold the tissue paper up, try to keep the folds as even as possible. When you go to round the edges, if the edges of the paper are not relatively even, some of the layers might get missed and your pom might look a bit funny.
- If the folds aren't coming out even, just make sure you round the edges pretty aggressively. That way you'll have a better chance of catching all the edges of the paper!
And now... how about a few pictures because they're so purty?
A monochromatic color scheme for this wedding decor looks pretty sophisticated. Who would have thought the word "sophisticated" could be used to describe tissue paper!!
Now... if you like the poms but don't have a wedding to use them at, here are a few ideas of how you could use them in your everyday life...
How about mini-poms to top cupcakes for a birthday party?
You could take them outdoors for a summer picnic...
Hey! Is that a mini-chalkboard I see???
How about in a nursery?
You could pom-ify your napkin rings...
If you REALLY like them... you could put them in your house...
You could use poms to accessorize that sofa you constructed out of pallets and an old door. I'm pretty sure EVERYONE has one of these in their house.
And of course... for a birthday party or baby shower...
Or... you could be super creative like Rosanna and make them with a bunch of elementary school kids in Vancouver Canucks colors!!! What little boy in the lower mainland wouldn't love that!?
Anyone else have a super creative idea on where you could use a pom in your everyday life?
Well... after searching the world wide web for images of tissue paper poms, it's apparent that everyone else thinks they're pretty cool too. So while I may not be super original with this little crafty decoration... they still were fun.
awesome tips! I'm planning to make some for both my kids birthdays at the end of the month (I got inspired from another blog as well).
ReplyDeleteThese are great! I'm also going to use them for a special little girl's first birthday party at the end of the month!
ReplyDeleteI have them in the girls room with the coffee filter light fixture and then the poms over there bed!! so cute!! Love the pics from the wedding
ReplyDeleteI like them on the cupcakes!
ReplyDeleteWho would've thought poms could look good in so many different settings!? They're all GORGEOUS.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the look of them in the nursery, and definitely with the outdoor picnic. But I doubt I have the patience required to concoct myself some poms ;)
LOVE these poms... well done, you are SO creative! (and so is Martha too I guess!)
